Work description:
Arise!
We who refuse to be slaves!
With our flesh and blood, let us build our new Great Wall!
Over the past three years, China has endured a relentless cycle of lockdowns and societal turmoil. Amidst this chaos, many individuals took to expressing their dissent online by quoting the first two sentences of the Chinese National Anthem, a symbolic act of rebellion. Yet, in the face of censorship, these expressions were swiftly erased from public view, including the anthem itself. It’s a surreal spectacle witnessing the ruling party of such a vast nation struggle to tolerate its own cultural heritage.
In response, I decided to inscribe these powerful words physically, ensuring their preservation for posterity. By doing so, I sought to reclaim a piece of our shared history and affirm the enduring spirit of those who resist oppression.
