”south east / south west”

Daniela Hedman & Torbjörn Johansson are an artist duo who, in addition to their own artistry, also collaborate under the name “south east / south west”. Since the start of 2016 they have proceeded an investigative and experimental work, where nature, its forces and human interference stands in focus. The project explores the uncontrollable as a co-creator in an artistic process and at the same time challenges established approaches and methods. Through site-specific installations outdoors or transformed into exhibitions in an indoor environment, the project develops and investigates new spatial experiences. Since its start ”south east / south west” has participated in several art-performance festivals, site specific exhibitions indoors and outdoors, received artists in residences and are continuously open for different spaces and context to where the project can develop further on.

“200 liters of water from the Sava, 200 liters of water from the Danube, 25 metal buckets, scoops and a metal pipe. The water will be transported, mixed and poured, uniting the different experiences of the waters and allowing them to merge.”

What is stability? Under ideal conditions, where the economy, war, traditions, or climate don’t pose obstacles, many of us have a need for a fixed point. Through this secure anchor, we can venture forth if we desire and are given the opportunity, while others are drawn to exploring the other side, what lies beyond, and perhaps choosing to build their existence there. Belonging/community. Is it static? Water, as an element, is volatile and mobile, in constant motion and flux. Is there a desire to reach a destination, a goal, or is the constant journey of the river the destination itself? We stand and observe. On solid ground in Belgrade, we watch from a place, at a moment in time, a meeting. Two waters coming from different directions. Along the way, they sweep up various substances and experiences. Invisible. In the heart of Belgrade, they meet the Danube and the Sava. One strong and powerful, the other calm and more timid.”
