In Olga Holzschuh’s artistic work photography, sculpture and performance are closely intertwined with questions of (in)stability, indexicality (as imprint and trace), physical presence and identity. The \u2018transitional\u2019 is at the core of her work. This is apparent not only in her performances, but also in her work with shape-shifting materials such as soap, photographic solutions (cyanotype), metal and clay. In this way, it is especially the traces, gaps and losses that become tangible and visible.Holzschuh’s work has been shown in numerous institutions including Kunsthalle M\u00fcnster (DE), Temporary Gallery in Cologne (DE), Ballon Rouge Galerie in Brussels (BE), EIGEN+ART LAB in Berlin (DE), among others. Holzschuh’s monograph ‘hold on’ was recently published by Distanz Verlag with texts by Juliane Duft and Patrizia Dander.<\/p>\n

\nSince the expansion of the war in Ukraine towards the west, the symbolic structure of \u2018Europe\u2019 feels threatened and is now looking closer at Eastern Europe, which is part of the continent but has never made it into the European \u2018we\u2019. The geographical center of Europe lies in Transcarpathia, in the west of present-day Ukraine, near the town of Rakhiv. At least that is how it was described in 1887 by the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, to which Transcarpathia belonged until 1919. Today, the town lies just outside the EU’s external border. The center of Europe has also shifted as a result of geographical recalculations. Olga Holzschuh’s works, presented at Art Weekend Belgrade, raise questions about belonging (to landscapes and national borders), historical upheavals of places and the associated changing (national) identities in Transcarpathia, a strip of land between the East and the West. It is a place where national flags and schoolbooks were continuously altered while people who lived there stayed. The artist, who comes from the German-Hungarian-Ruthenian ethnic group of this region, creates a space through her works in which the political and the personal intermingle through memories (photo archives) and languages (of the different ethnic groups living here).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
